What I Talk About Love By Raymond Carver - 1352 Words

In the short story, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love by Raymond Carver (1981), we find that there is no singular definitive meaning of love, because love is perceived differently by the different characters. We also see that love may have stages and throughout all its complexities, people still hold onto their present love. In this story, we see the four characters, Mel and his wife Terri, Nick whom is the narrator and his wife Laura, all struggle to define what love truly is, while seated around a table drinking Gin. We will begin the analysis of love by looking at Terri’s meaning of love and then Mel’s, Laura and Nick’s love and then finally ending with the love of the old man, in the story that Mel shares with the group. However, Terri is the only one with direct meaning of love to her. One tha t she doesn’t question, it doesn’t perplex her, and one she will never forget. She also doesn’t need it to match up to any other levels of love. Terri said, â€Å"It was love. Sure, it’s abnormal in most people’s eyes. But he was willing to die for it. He did die for it.† Though Mel felt he is the better man between him and Ed, what he doesn’t realise is that Terri may feel that Ed loved her more than Mel did. The difference with Terri’s perception of love was that she was content with it even until the end. She made it clear that â€Å"people are different† as she stated it several times throughout the story in response to anyone that tried to take away her meaning of the love she and Ed shared. Another point, that arises in the story is that Terri leaves Ed for Mel and Mel accuses Ed to be abusive, dangerous and may even crazy. However it may seem that Terri has a type, because Mel is very rude and harsh when he speaks to her, and she allows him to talk to her how he pleases and then waits for him to â€Å"make up with her†. We see this on page 1 of the story, when Mel shares with the group that Terri is of the â€Å"kick-me-so-I’ll-know-love me school† after he tells her don’t be silly as if not valuing her views. Though Ratcliffe casts suspicion on him momentarily, the reader is soon informed that his gut instinct was correct. Jeronimo is a good monk. Jeronimo and Schedoni are the good and bad halves of the monk. Jeronimo, however, can take pride in the fact that he is holy and his brothers love him. His ego shines brightest in his boast, Do you [Vivaldi] not know that every brother in the convent would rise to avenge it [my death]? (137). One of the few characters in this book who lives up to his title, the faithful Paulo (106) is a wonderful servant. Unlike Bonarmo, he isnt very bright, but being the good servant, he is loyal to his master to the point of death. Both his intelligence (or lack thereof) and loyalty glow when he tells the guard of the Inquisition that no one comes to the Inquisition for fun (199). One of our main characters, Vivaldi, is also a man of virtue. He is very adoring of Ellena, unto the point of chivalry. Though a few times, he loses patience with her, for the most part, he lets her take her time and loves her just the same. He is a true storybook hero in that he risks his life for her (several times) and travels everywhere to find her. He never gives up hope, but is not so unrealistic that he appears stupid to the reader. The Machese is not mentioned much, but for the most part, he is a good guy. Like all the other characters

The process of obtaining the intelligence starts with the collection of any type of signal, whether it be infrared, electro-optical, or electronic. After the signals are collected, analysts encounter the tasks of cryptanalysis, transcription, traffic analysis, and translations of the enemy information systems; analyst then determine size, location, distance, and terrain features. The data is usually processed in overlays and graphic displays within the United States. End products are then populated into National databases for the use of the Intelligenc e Community. The increasing utilization of computers, the internet, satellites, sophisticated encryption, and cellular telephones have streamlined effective and accurate Human Intelligence (HUMINT); implementation of Signals Intelligence has became an important role to maintain superiority over adversaries. There are many agencies that have the ability to perform Signals Intelligence, electronic reconnaissance and most of all signals intelligence from all available sources inducive to the environment. The United States Army uses the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint STARS) as its main entity for signals collection. The Joint STARS platform was designed to provide a highly effective, real-time, collection tool to the ground task force commanders during battlefield engagements, but for the past ten years, the sensor has been used for peacekeeping missions. Army analysts can predict the enemys behavior by identifying choke points, potential avenues of approach and operating patterns such as supply routes and logistical points. The analysis gives the ground commander a more complete view of the enemys weaknesses. The United States Air Force employs the Joint STARS in a different mission than the Army. The Air Force uses Joint STARS as a battlefield management tool versus a collection tool as used for by the Army. The Air Force uses the platform to provide immediate and direct support to the Air Component Commander and continue to observe the enemys movement from a far distance in the sky. Providing essential data to commanders such as size, direction, and speed of the adversaries, with minimum casualties while under battlefield conditions, makes the Joint STARS an extremely effective tool. The Air Force also employs the Predator vehicles, which are unmanned aerial vehicles that are used for reconnaissance. The Predator is multifaceted; it has the ability to collect signals in many scientific realms. Imagery that the Predators sensor can ingest can appear in the form of infrared, electro-optical, or synthetic aperture radar. Another signals collection tool used by the Air Force is the RC-135 mission aircraft.With all of the sophisticated equipment onboard, the aircrew has the capability to analyze the entire electromagnetic spectrum, simultaneously b eing supported by analysts thousands of miles away. The National Security Agency (NSA) is the chief organization that focuses on SIGINT and cryptology. The NSA has two national missions: (A) The Information Assurance mission provides the solutions, products and services, and conducts defensive information operations, to achieve information assurance for information infrastructures critical to U.S. national security interests. (B) The foreign signals intelligence or SIGINT mission allows for an effective, unified organization and control of all the foreign signals collection and processing activities of the United States. NSA is authorized to produce SIGINT in accordance with objectives, requirements and priorities established by the Director of Central Intelligence with the advice of the National Foreign Intelligence Board. Music industry foundations Before embarking on any discussion about mobile digital music distribution, this section gives an overview of the foundations that form the music industry. Faced with an impeding disruptive technology, the recording industry has reacted using of the strategies that Christensen (2001) presents in his paper.
